Apple releases version 12 of Logic Pro with new features including AI-powered synth phrase generation and highly accurate chord progression extraction. This is the first major version update for Logic Pro in about 1 year and 8 months, since Logic Pro 11 was released in May 2024.
At first glance, Logic Pro 12 may not seem like it has undergone any major changes , but as expected of a major version upgrade, it boasts numerous new features and over 100 improvements. One of the most notable features is “Chord ID.” Accessed from the Region menu, “Chord ID” uses Apple’s AI technology to analyze audio and MIDI regions and extract chord progressions and keys. Select a region and run “Analyze Chords.”
A chord progression will appear below the region, allowing you to apply it to a chord track as needed, or transpose based on the analysis results. The most likely use is for “Session Player” to generate phrases based on the analyzed chord progression. Using “Chord ID,” you can analyze the chord progression of a recording of a musician’s performance and have “Session Player” create keyboard and bass phrases.
The phrase-generating “Session Player” keyboard player now includes a new “Synth” option in addition to the existing “Piano” option. This allows for the generation of synth phrases. The “Synth” style includes three options: “Simple Pad,” “Modulated Pad,” and “Rhythmic Chords,” with numerous presets included. Of course, you can also fine-tune the generated phrases using the editor, even editing the LFO (!) for “Modulated Pad” and “Rhythmic Chords.”
While the Session Player defaults to a standard software sound source, you can also use other AU plug-ins or external hardware sound sources. The new Session Player, which generates pads and rhythmic chord phrases one after another, is likely to be a valuable “AI assistant” for composing.
Logic Pro 12 also adds a number of new sound libraries and a new management interface. It also includes numerous sound packs created by leading artists and producers, totaling a massive 43GB. Of course, you can also download the libraries you need individually.
